Perrotta, R.G..
Analyzed in this paper is the structure of the fleet applied to mackerel fishing based at Mar del Plata Port (38° LS); an attempt is also made at establishing the best system for measuring the fishing effort; the changes in catch capability (availability and vulnerability)are duly analyzed. Sampling vessels that allow greater data, particulary by in relation to the fishing effort, are available since the 1983/84 fishing season.

Perrotta, R.G.; Lasta, C.A.; Aubone, A..
The data belong to the demersal fishery research cruise H-13/94. Stratification used for research surveys from the catches values was tested, both for the northern area, Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) located between 34° and 39°S, and the southern area situated between 38°30' and 41°30'S (El Rincón, Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina). The variables considered were: croaker and striped weak fish densities and depth. Discriminant factor analysis indicates the formation of two and six strata for the southern and northern areas respectively. The adequate confidential limits of the estimated biomass for each strata obtained for different species, indicate that the criteria for stratification is satisfactory. The number of catches by strata was...

Carozza, C.R.; Perrotta, R.G.; Cotrina, C.P.; Bremec, C.; Aubone, A..
This work deals with the structure and efficiency of the fleet fishing white croaker in Argentina. Results show that there exist two strata delimited by 17.25 m length and 345 HP vessels. The most efficient is constituted by those of smaller dimensions. During 1992-1995 landings were sampled and subsequently analyzed. A decrease in mean length landed and an increase of juveniles presence were detected. The situation coincided with an increment of catches, landings, fishing effort, exports and the fleet activities in "El Salado" area (35° 57' - 36° 57' LS).

Perrotta, R.G.; Ruarte, C.O..
The stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) caught in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (SW Atlantic) has a wide latitudinal distribution (22° S-43° S). In Argentina there are two main fishing areas, the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone and 'El Rincón', southern zone of the Buenos Aires littoral. The importance of the species makes it necessary to define an annual abundance index that would allow to diagnose the state of the stock. The model adjusted to calculate the index is the General Linear Model. The factors used were Year, Quarter, Length, Stratum (4 categories) and sub-areas (5 categories), all statistically significant. The problem generated by the presence in the model of first order interactions that include the Year factor is discussed. The...

OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Tringali, L.S.; Izzo, A.; Boccanfuso, J.; López, F.; Macchi, G.J..
Movements pattern records of the Mar del Plata inshore fishing fleet during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 chub mackerel fishing seasons (October-January) allowed to observe that there is coincidence between the decrease of the 1983-1997 catches with respect to years previous to the 1975/76 "critical season" and a reduction of the inshore fleet fishing grounds which modifies accessibility of the fleet to the chub mackerel schools. Biostatistical and gonadal development results obtained in the Mar del Plata area (i.e., presence of adults during almost the whole fishing season which overlaps with the spawning season) do not differ significantly from those obtained during previous fishing seasons. As recommended in previous papers, chub mackerel fishing operations...

OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Hernandez, D.R..
The temperature that limits the presence of schools of Argentine chub mackerel Scomber japonicus was found to be around 19°C in the Mar del Plata area Buenos Aires prov., Argentina. At higher values, most shoals leave coastal waters in direction to the mid-shelf. An inverse relationship was observed between catches per unit of effort CPUE and sea surface temperature. The highest CPUE values corresponded to temperatures lower than 19°C. Beyond that value, the possibility of obtaining a CPUE higher than the unit is nearly null and the low standard deviation means it is unlikely to reach high CPUE values. The economic profit per minute of each daily cruise was estimated using a case study carried out with a single vessel pilot with mean structural and...

OceanDocs
Lasta, C.A.; Carozza, C.R.; Suquelle, P.; Bremec, C.; Errazti, E.; Perrotta, R.G.; Cotrina, C.P.; Bertelo, C.; Boccanfuso, J..
Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri fishery during three intensive fishing seasons in the outer area of the La Plata River (Argentina-Uruguay) is analyzed. Resource exploitation in the South Atlantic area shows a general retraction of the distribution range and an isolation of the La Plata River stock where most of the fishing effort concentrates. The species market evolution brought about, for Argentina and Uruguay, an important shift in its dynamics as of 1992, when the product insertion in Asiatic markets generated an important commercial attraction and a subsequent increase in the fishing effort by the argentine inshore coastal fleet. This caused a change in the fishery development in Argentina and the establishment, in winter, of a fleet...

Garciarena, A.D.; Perrotta, R.G..
Length growth parameters were calculated and total length-weight and total length-fork length relationships, which showed no differences between sexes, were fitted for the South Atlantic bream (Seriolella porosa). Length at first maturity was also calculated. The results were as follows: L (mm)= 490.96k years-¹) = 0.154; t0 (years)= -3.915; W(g) = 4*10-6)*TL³.1989; FL(mm) = 0.8917*TL1.0006);L sub 50 (mm)= 290.61. Natural mortality was estimated at 0.274 and limit age at 11 years. Samples were taken during research surveys carried out in 1999 and 2000 in the Argentine Sea (Atlantic SW). Sagittae otoliths of 374 specimen were used for age determination. Total fish length ranged from 226 mm to 550 mm (1-14 years). Commercial landing data of trawl fleets for...

Perrotta, R.G..
Mackerel from SW Atlantic (22° -39°S) and the coast of Cataluña (42° 30'N) were compared by analizing both morphometric and meristic characters. A multivariate analysis, i.e. principal components was used. The growth curves corresponding to mackerels from different regions (Canarias, North of Chile, Mar del Plata and Rincón in Argentine) were also compared, as well as the mean length at ages 1 and 2 (Mar del Plata- Cataluña, Rincón- Cataluña). Significant differences in the growth were found between two groups. The first group was integrated by three SW Atlantic population (Brasil, Mar del Plata, Rincón), which possible conform a subspecies of Scomber japonicus. The second one was represented by the coastal mackerel off Cataluña.

Comparative study on growth of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus Houttuyn, 1782) from three different regions: NW Mediterranean, NE and SW Atlantic OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Carvalho, N.; Isidro, E..
The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) from the NW Mediterranean, along the Catalan coast (Spain), were estimated. These results constitute the first estimated values for chub mackerel in this area and were as follows: L∞(cm) = 39.75; K (years-1) = 0.298; t0 (years) = -1.40 (for age groups 0 to 8). These results were compared with the estimated growth parameters for the chub mackerel that inhabits other two regions: NE Atlantic (Azores) and SW Atlantic (Argentina). Significant differences in growth curves between regions were found when the growth parameters, L∞, K and t0, were simultaneously compared. When comparing the growth parameters L~! and K individually, significant differences between regions were also...

Perrotta, R.G..
The polaca (Micromesistius australis)is a typical fish from the cold Malvinas current (temperatures between 3° and 10°C). The species is found in depths between 90 and 800 m and in latitudes from 37°40' to 50° S during winter and spring and from 42°S to 55°S during summer time, over the patagonian shelf and Burdwood Bank. One part of the stock reaches the southern region of the Scotia Sea, the western South Georgias and eastern South Shetland Islands. The dominant food species are Euphausia spp. The polaca is mainly a carcinophagous fish and may be found in a 3-4 trophic level, being one of the main food sources for primary and secondary ichthyophagous fishes.

Ruarte, C.O.; Perrotta, R.G..
The stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) has a wide latitudinal distribution (22° S-43° S) and it is object of fishery in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (SW Atlantic). In this last country, it is mainly captured in the coastal region of Buenos Aires Province by means of a fleet, which has between 20 m and 30 m length. In Argentina, the average landings in the last 5 years were 9,900 t. It is the second commercial species among the coastal groups. There are two main fishery areas of this species: the Argentinean-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and the El Rincón area, in the South of bonaerense littoral. Due to the importance of this species, it is necessary to define an index of annual abundance to allow a suitable diagnosis of the fishery...

OceanDocs
Urteaga, J.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
Argentine black drum distributes mainly in shallow waters associated to estuarine areas, particularly to Samborombon Bay where it may be detected throughout the year. Nevertheless, it can also be spotted more southwards (40°S) and at deeper waters. During summer, catches of the species in Samborombon Bay are practically negligible, probably due to movements towards shallow waters out of reach of the inshore commercial fleet. Landings increase in autumn and show peak values in winter, coinciding with the fishing season of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, whose geographical distribution within the bay overlaps that of black drum. As of 1995, landings of black drum showed increasing trends both in Argentina and Uruguay. These increments coincide...

Carozza, C.R.; Hernandez, D.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri)has a broad distribution along the Atlantic coast of the Americas, from Mexico to the south of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the southern end of distribution, Argentina and Uruguay catch the species with different commercial fleet types bay or creek, coastal and off-shore and modalities of bottom trawling with doors and paired trawling. Maximum catches of both countries, that reached 60,000 t, were registered between 1995 and 1997. After that period a remarkable decrease was observed, specially in Argentina where catches remained at around 6,000 t over a total of 30,000 t for both countries. The commercial fleet was divided in three categories and the total area of study in three subareas: El Salado,...

Brazilian flathead (Percophis brasiliensis), of wide latitudinal distribution (23° S-47° S), is caught in Argentina in two coastal areas north and south of the Province of Buenos Aires delimited by the 39° S latitude. The species shows the highest abundance and catch yield percentages ( 5. ) of all coastal fish groups. The importance of the species makes it necessary to analyze mean lengths and define an annual abundance index that would allow to diagnose the state of the stock. To calculate the index the General Linear Model was adjusted. The factors used were Year, Quarter and 4 sub-areas, all statistically significant. The problem generated by the presence in the model of first order interactions that include the Year factor is discussed. It is...

Hernandez, D.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
The problem in the definition of a relative annual abundance index using a General Linear Model is posed. The possible factors generating changes in the catch per unit effort (CPUE) are discussed and the parameterization of the model is analyzed, in particular the Sigma-restrictive parameterization. This report considers the problem caused by the presence of interactions of first order that include the factor Year in the model. It has been mathematically demonstrated that in the presence of these interactions, the index series is not proportional to the abundance annual mean of the resource. An approach of practical order to evaluate the possible effect of the interactions that include the factor Year in the index is considered using the percentage of...

Kitefin shark Dalatia licha (Dalatiidae)fishery in the northeastern Atlantic and some recommendations for elasmobranchs explotation OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G..
In the Azores Islands (NE Atlantic), between 1986 and 1998, Dalatias licha was caught to obtain liver oil. A drastic abundance decline, probably attributed to a high level of exploitation, was observed. In Argentina elasmobranchs have undergone intensive fishing and, at present, catches are compromised. The history of the fishery in Azores should be taken as example and warning when implementing elasmobranchs fisheries management in Argentina.
